The ongoing Middle East crisis is impacting the energy market, petrochemical raw materials, and global shipping routes, significantly increasing upstream costs and supply chain pressures on Singapore’s plastics industry, potentially leading to shortages in some sectors.

In response to inquiries from 8world News, Lim Kim Liang, President of the Singapore Plastic Industry Association (SPIA), pointed out that as a manufacturing base highly dependent on trade, Singapore’s local plastics industry is closely linked to the global circulation of crude oil, naphtha, ethylene, propylene, and polymer resins. As logistics routes through the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding areas continue to be disrupted, increased volatility in raw material prices, transportation delays, and rising freight surcharges are gradually impacting local manufacturers.

He said that due to tightening supplies of petroleum-derived raw materials, plastic resins widely used in packaging, injection molding, films, consumer goods, medical products, and industrial components are facing upward price pressure.

With the escalating conflict between the US and Iran, several raw material suppliers have declared force majeure, and local plastic manufacturers are facing severe supply disruptions and shortages.

He stated that for plastic processing companies, replenishment cycles may become irregular, production cycles will face challenges, and deliveries may be delayed. The ripple effects are particularly pronounced in industries highly dependent on plastic packaging and components, including food and beverage packaging, disposable medical supplies, household consumer goods, electronic and precision parts, and logistics and industrial packaging.

He pointed out that as costs continue to rise, some manufacturers may have to selectively pass on costs, optimize materials, and reduce material thickness.

He also said that this crisis highlights the necessity of strengthening the resilience of the plastic supply chain. The association is assisting its member companies in reducing their reliance on supplies from the Gulf region and expanding their resin sourcing from Northeast Asia and ASEAN to diversify their risk profile.

SINGAPORE – More than $130,000 was donated to The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (STSPMF) at the Singapore Plastic Industry Association’s (SPIA) gala dinner on Friday night (Nov 8).

The association marked its 30th anniversary by making a donation of $138,000 to the fund in support of ChildAid 2019, an annual charity concert organised by The Straits Times and The Business Times.

Mr Chee Hong Tat, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry, and Education was the guest of honour at the dinner, held to highlight the association’s achievements and contributions to the plastic sector in Singapore and around the region over the years.

Mr Chee said the plastics industry has developed alongside Singapore’s economy, and is now a more high-tech and capital-intensive industry than before.

He added that since the association started 30 years ago, the industry has grown from strength to strength, from an annual turnover of $6 billion in 1989 to $13 billion today.

He also applauded the association’s donation to the fund, describing it as a meaningful gesture to give back to society and provide for future generations.

Mr Chee and members of the SPIA’s board of directors presented a cheque to the fund’s general manager, Ms Tan Bee Heong, at the dinner at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront hotel which was attended by about 400 people, including SPIA members and associates, representatives from the government agencies and other trade associations.

The STSPMF provides recess and transport money to students from low-income families.

The ChildAid concert, which started in 2005, has raised $18 million for the STSPMF and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund, which have helped more than 175,000 children and youth.

SPIA officially moved in to the Trade Association Hub (TA Hub) at Jurong Town Hall on 12 May 2017. With many trade associations housed together, the TA Hub is a vibrant and collaborative ecosystem whereby trade associations can share resources, leverage on each other’s expertise and build new partnerships to promote and facilitate cross-industry collaboration. The TA Hub was officially opened by the Prime Minister Mr Lee Hsien Loong on 22 November 2017.

With the support of JTC Corporation and Enterprise Singapore, the SCCCI established the TA Hub as a venue where fellow trade associations could co-locate under one roof to lead the transformation and growth of their industries, and provide affordable office premises and shared facilities for TAs to undertake industry development initiatives.

The Trade Association Hub is located at 9 Jurong Town Hall Road, Singapore 609431and is gazetted as a National Monument in 2015.
